Little Falls welcomes historic return of the Seneca Chief on June 10

Step back in time and experience a living piece of New York’s maritime heritage! The iconic Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief, a full-scale replica of the vessel that inaugurated the Erie Canal in 1825, is returning to Little Falls as part of its exciting “Back to Buffalo” Tour.

After its triumphant Bicentennial Voyage in 2025, the Seneca Chief is making its westward journey home, bringing hands-on history, education and celebration to canal communities along the way. Built by the Buffalo Maritime Center through a remarkable community boatbuilding project, this traditionally crafted wooden boat serves as a floating classroom that connects visitors with the Erie Canal’s rich legacy.

Mark your calendars for June 10 and join the celebration at the Little Falls Canal Harbor/Rotary Park. Public viewing and tours will take place from 4 – 7 p.m.

Come aboard (or view from the dock) this stunning replica and explore life on the canal as it was in the 1800s. Knowledgeable crew members will share captivating stories about the boat’s construction, its historic significance and the Erie Canal’s profound impact on New York’s economy, culture, environment and communities. Enjoy descriptive presentations and have your questions answered in this immersive experience.
