The dangers of a sedentary childhood

The dangers of a sedentary childhood

Modern childhood looks quite a bit different from what it did only a generation ago. Behaviors have quietly shifted from outdoor play to screen-centered solitary activity. While digital devices offer some measure of connectivity, they also can drive physical inactivity among developing youth.

The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 17 engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. The National Institutes of Health says American youth are failing to meet that figure, with up to 80% of children spending their days overwhelmingly sedentary.

Prolonged inactivity can have some important physical consequences. The American Heart Association emphasizes that sedentary behavior accelerates cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and stiffness in the arteries in young people. Furthermore, according to data published in JAMA Pediatrics, nearly one in three adolescents now meets the clinical criteria for prediabetes, a rate that has more than doubled over the last 20 years. This uptick coincides with rising childhood obesity rates. Inactivity causes a chronic energy imbalance, leading to fat storage that can induce systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, according to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Inactivity also can lead to compromised bone development. Bone density peaks during youth, making weight-bearing activity essential. Sedentary children may not be getting the exercise they need to build strong bones, increasing their risk for early-onset osteoporosis later in life.

The harms of a sedentary lifestyle extend beyond physical health. The CDC notes that excessive screen time and a lack of movement leads to elevated rates of anxiety, depression and poor sleep quality among youth. Physically active children demonstrate better focus and academic performance compared to their sedentary peers.

Prioritizing movement over screen time can help children protect their physical health.
